During the period of breaking up with your ex, accept their phone calls, but don’t dwell too much on the issues that initiated the breakup because it may snowball into a bigger quarrel and that is not what you want.
Keep the conversation brief and accept any invitation to go to lunch, but try not to involve anyone else. Going out with your ex will give you both time to talk, but the ideal place would probably be a park, where there are a lot of people around, but not necessarily anyone you both know.
Let the conversation be engaging, not boring or aloof. Talk about how you would want a relationship to be. Remember, you don’t want to target the other person. If your lunch date does not work out, don’t worry. There will be other opportunities. This is just a starting point. If it did not go the way you would have liked, don’t throw in the towel. Don’t bad mouth your ex because your wish wasn’t granted right away. Instead, smile and let your ex wonder why you are smiling. He or she may ask you why. Just tell them that you are happy that you could meet with them and are looking forward to talking more about the relationship.

Don’t become an emotional basket case. You don’t have to do that. If it was meant to be, you will get back with your ex. Give it time so your ex will see how much they really need you.
